The 2017 Special Olympics Washington Winter Games take place in Wenatchee and North Central Washington this weekend, March 3rd through the 5th.

The theme this year, according to Caryl Andre from Wenatchee Parks and Rec, is "Time to Shine."

"Put your best foot forward and shine no matter what it is and these guys shine. They don't have to even try, they all shine. They'll all have big smiles and just are just so happy to be here and participating."

The events are completely free to attend, including the opening ceremonies which take place Friday night at 7:00 in the Town Toyota Center.

Andre calls the event a win-win for everybody.

"It's not only a huge economic impact, having 3,000 people come into town for three days, but it brings our community together as far as volunteers. And the camaraderie, the pure joy that not only athletes have, but volunteers and everybody associated with it have, it's hard to describe."

They are also looking for more volunteers and if you're interested in celebrating these great athletes, contact Andre at Wenatchee Parks and Rec.

Some of the competitors will move on to national games that take place next summer in Seattle. You can find the full schedule at SOWA.org.
