The 26th Annual Wenatchee River Salmon Festival kicks off Friday at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. The event marks the beginning of the fall fish migration and includes interpretive displays, food, music as well as tribal ceremonies. Susan Peterson helps organize the free three-day event and donations are welcome.  Peterson says donations help support a $1,500 college scholarship for a local high school senior.

A new attraction this year, some years 10 years in the making. Peterson says the Salmon Festival obtained the government grant funding to provide a new activity that allows visitors to learn more about wildfires.

Thursday is a special "school day" with students from all over the North Central Washington region attending.   The three day Salmon Festival opens to the public Friday through Sunday at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery.
