The annual Chelan County Household Hazardous Waste Collection is this Friday and Saturday. Chelan County residents can safely dispose dispose of toxic, flammable and corrosive materials free of charge at four locations.

Coordinator Jill Fitzsimmons says a change to the program this year, latex and water based paint will NOT be accepted.  Fitzsimmons says small amounts of these types of paints can be dried out by pouring cat litter, sawdust or sand into the paint can and once it has absorbed the paint and dried into a solid, it may be safely disposed of in the garbage.

Oil-based paints will be accepted along with typical household hazardous wastes like gasoline, anti-freeze, engine fluids, fertilizer; pesticides, herbicides, insect sprays; pool chemicals and rechargeable batteries.

The free events are Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wenatchee Forest Service on Melody Lane in Wenatchee or 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Entiat Fire Station and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon, at the Fire Station in Chelan and from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Peshastin Elementary School.
