Police Shooting Justified

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - Yakima County's top prosecutor has determined that a Wapato police officer was justified in the fatal shooting of a 38-year-old man.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports prosecuting attorney Joe Brusic Thursday cleared Officer Michael Campos of criminal wrongdoing in the July 31 shooting. He will remain on leave while a federal prosecutor reviews the case.

Campos and another officer had responded to a home on a domestic violence call when they encountered Mario Martinez Torres.

Campos told investigators he shot Martinez Torres after the man tried to disarm him and took his Taser during a struggle.

He says Martinez Torres shocked the other responding officer with the stun gun and turned the weapon on him, prompting him to open fire.

Martinez Torres' family maintains that Campos fired without provocation.
