Republican Rep. Dave Reichert of Washington's 8th district is retiring from Congress after seven terms and will not seek re-election.

The former sheriff who captured the "Green River Killer" has represented a suburban King County since 2005 that was expanded to include Chelan and Kititas County and East Wenatchee in 2012.

Reichert said the decision was difficult but he is looking forward to spending more time with his family.

The announcement is giving Democrats renewed hope of winning a district held by Republicans for more than three decades.

Rep. Dan Newhouse, who represents the neighboring 4th District said he will miss working with his friend and colleague on issues in Central Washington.
