As we transition to more spring-like weather, fog can be a major problem on area roadways.

WSP Trooper Brian Moore said it's important to turn your headlights on, even if you can see just fine.

"What we don't want to happen is you not being seen and a driver that has their headlights on and are approaching to make a left turn and now they make a turn in front of oncoming traffic because there are no headlights and that driver wasn't adequately visible."

Moore said it's about safety and courtesy and that if your car is involved in an accident and you don't have your headlights on, you could be liable.

"The law does require that headlights be turned on an hour prior to sunset and at least for one hour after sunrise. The law continues on to state that due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, drivers must turn on their headlights to be seen at a distance of 1,000 feet."

Moore said they often see cars around dawn and dusk that don't turn on headlights because the drivers can see the road, but he stressed it's about courtesy and safety in regards to other drivers.
