The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a reoccurring scam with a dark twist.

Sheriff Kevin Morris says the scam is similar to when a perpetrator, impersonating a member of law enforcement, contacts a victim and tells them that a family member is in jail and the victim needs to send money for their release.

"Somebody from Mexico called one of our citizens claiming that they have a family member that witnessed something the cartel did and they were kidnapped." explained Morris, "Then they asked for a ransom."

Two reports of the scam were received last week. Morris adds that if you receive this type of call, don't give the caller any money or information.

Instead, try to get a call-back number and then contact law enforcement.
