Quincy police will be conducting extra patrols around area schools following several instances of students fighting on and off campus to start the school year.

Captain Ryan Green said both the department and Quincy School District just want to give their youth the best chance to be productive members of society.

"Getting into assaultive-type behavior can affect things like college life or military prospects." said Green, "It's about making smart decisions. There are better ways to resolve issues than fighting."

Green acknowledged that there has definitely been an increase in fights this year. He relates the behavior to students adjusting to a post-COVID reality.

Students dealing with bullies, anger, or other issues are advised to reach out to their school counselors or local authorities.
