The Wenatchee School District will join a massive class-action lawsuit against e-cigarette and vape company Juul and its major investor Altira after a unanimous decision by the school board Tuesday night.

Wenatchee will join over 600 school districts in 30 states in the suit at no cost. The district will only pay 20% of any damages earned to the law firm of Stevens Clay if they win.

Superintendent Paul Gordon said he wants to see Juul held liable for the unprecedented rise in nicotine use among teens.

"It's one of the bigger issues confronting our high schools. We're also seeing it in the middle schools but high school is where it's very prevalent," Gordon said. "This has been a constant battle for years. This is not something new.

The district is hoping any monetary damages collected could be used for further education on vaping, student interventions and other ideas like vape detectors in bathrooms.
