WSDOT is unveiling their plans to drastically alter a roughly two-mile section of State Route 28/Sunset Highway through East Wenatchee.

The SR28 East Wenatchee Corridor Improvement Project will stretch from 9th Street north to Hadley Street in the unincorporated part of Douglas County.

WSDOT plans to install four multi-lane roundabouts at SR28's intersections with Valley Mall Parkway, 15th Street, 19th Street and 23rd Street. SR 28 will also be widened from two total lanes to four, with a median curb running down the center of the roadway to take away left turn options. Those needing to make a left turn between roundabouts will instead have to make a U-turn one roundabout past their destination.

The speed limit will also be reduced from 40 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. Sidewalks will be added to both sides of the road for most of the project.

Project Engineer Jeff Deal says WSDOT will need to purchase 12 full parcels of land and partially acquire land from another 92 parcels for the project. 16 additional parcels will be temporarily affected.

"We do anticipate that there will be some land owners that are resistant to us impacting their property, which is understandable." stated Deal, "We've included that in our schedule."

The project will cost the state roughly $58.5 million.

Construction is not expected to begin until 2027.
