Tasha Gray, the woman who was inside the car when Cameron Ayers was shot by East Wenatchee Police Officer Kaiti Wilkins last month has claimed in a published interview that her boyfriend was reaching for his seat belt buckle when he was killed. Dave Helvey, lead investigator says even though Wilkins has yet to provide a statement, Gray's claims won't compromise the case

Gray claimed in an interview with the Wenatchee World, Wilkins fired two shots through the window of the car at Ayers as he unbuckled his seat belt. The incident is still under investigation. At the time of the incident, Ayers had an outstanding warrant for escape from community custody. The Douglas County Prosecutor's awaiting a final report and State Crime lab analysis before determining if any charges are filed. Officer Wilkins remains on paid administrative leave.
