The holiday spirit isn't just about receiving, but also giving.

The Manger Mall is a Chelan Valley tradition that encompasses the idea of giving back to those less fortunate during the holiday season. On December 14 from 9-5:30, families that are tight on money can come to the Manson North Shore Bible Church, select one gift for each child on their list along with one comfort item (hat, blanket, pillow).

"Manger Mall serves about 700-800 children in our valley every year," said Shannon Leahy, event coordinator.

This is the 11th year for the event. Parents can fill out a registration form, available at Chelan and Manson schools, Chelan Valley Hope and the food bank, and mail it back to the Manger Mall.

"They're (parents) are assigned a shopping time and then they come Saturday and shop for the perfect gift for their darlings," said Leahy. "We have gifts sorted by age and gender. Gifts do cost $1 a piece and that's so there's some buy in from parents, it's not a donation or a charity. It's something that helps their Christmas a little more special."

In order to provide this service (that includes coffee, punch and cookies), volunteers are needed, particularly for the afternoon shift (2-5:30). Send Manger Mall an email at volunteermangermall@gmail.com. For those tight on time and can't volunteer in person, purchase a gift or two in the $25.00 range for children infants to 18. Drop off gifts in the decorated boxes at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce or the North Shore Bible Church by December 9th. Or write a check made out to Manger Mall and mail it to Manger Mall, P.O. Box 477, Chelan WA 98816.
