UPDATE: Victim was Florida man

The kayaker who was involved in the fatal kayaking accident on the Wenatchee River in Plain on Monday afternoon has been identified by the Chelan County Sheriff's Office as a 61-year old Hollywood, Florida man, Michael R. Lawrence.

Sgt. Kent Sisson said a swift-water rescue team responded to 911 calls reporting a man floating in the river trying to catch up to an empty kayak.  Rescuers located Lawrence's body a short time later in about five feet of water but attempts at CPR were not successful.  The victim was not wearing a personal flotation device

The Chelan County Sheriff's Office said a 61-year-old man died Tuesday while kayaking on the Wenatchee River near Plain.  A witness called Rivercom a little before 1:30pm to report an empty kayak floating down the river with someone in the river  trying to catch up to the kayak.

Chelan County Fire District #9, Cascade EMS, and the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched and found the kayak at about 2:30, but initially no sign of the individual in the water.  Later,  a body was located at the bottom of the river in about five feet of water.  Responders began CPR but were not able to resuscitate him. The name of the victim has not been released yet pending notification of next of kin.
