The Department of Ecology released the drafted water supply and demand forecast in the Columbia River Basin, a glimpse ahead for the next 20 years. The reports are conducted every five years and for the 2021 report, researchers studied water supply and demand variables to gauge future water availability in 2040 and beyond.

"We take into consideration what the projections for changing in climate, what different crops farmers might be planting and we also look at the what communities' needs might be at that time," said Joye Redfield-Wilder, communications manager.

The reports help water managers and local planners to introduce projects in order to ensure enough water availability for the agriculture economy, the cities and stream flows for fish.

"We like to hear back from the farming community, different communities, the tribes, because they may have some ideas or anecdotal information that could contribute or be forward thinking," said Redfield-Wilder.

The comment period is open until July 2 with two online workshops offered on June 8 and June 17. For more information on the workshops and details on the report, visit here.
