FEMA is getting the word out that it is now offering financial assistance for funeral expenses from COVID-19 deaths.

According to the agency, the reimbursement comes with several restrictions. First, the expense must have been incurred after January 20th, 2020 and must not have been reimbursed by other financial sources. Secondly, an official death certificate attributing the death directly or indirectly to COVID-19, as well as funeral expense documents such as receipts and invoices, must be provided in order to receive assistance.

Assistance is limited to a maximum of $9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $35,500 per application per state. Initial applications are only being taken over the phone, with each case handled individually. There is currently no deadline to apply.

There is no requirement for the deceased person to have been a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien.
