National Forests in Oregon and Washington will waive their fees at day use recreation sites Thursday in honor of Veterans Day.

Okanogan/Wenatchee National Forest Public Affairs Officers Robin DeMario said fees will be waived for picnic areas, boat launches and trailheads. The Forest Service will still charge for camping, cabin rentals and other permits.

"It's a way for us to honor our veterans and their families and to get folks back out into the woods if they have a chance." DeMario explained, "To enjoy a day out enjoying nature."

Cold weather has certainly crept back into the forest by this point in the fall. DeMario advises checking the weather forecast before heading into the forest. Also, wear plenty of layers, choose good footwear, and let someone know where you are going and when you plan on returning.
