The State Department of Ecology is taking public comments on the preliminary design report for the second phase of a project to improve Saddle Rock.

After the first phase was complete, Wenatchee Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director Dave Erickson said they finished the lower portion of the hill and would then move up.

"Remove all the waste rock, restore the native areas with natural plants and grass. On the way back down we hope to fix the trail so that we'll have improved drainage. We're looking to adding rock to the trail surface so that way it will be easier walk with an all-surface trail to the top."

He also hopes that they'll be able to add benches and interpretive signs.

Erickson says they'll go out to bid in June.

"Once it's all done, all cleaned up, all the grass and plants have grown back, we should be good to go for a number of years and can focus on some of the smaller trails and work the Land Trust up there."

The initial design report for Phase 2 was developed in January.
