The Washington State Department of Health and the Grant County Health District announced the first confirmed case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C, associated with COVID-19 in Grant County.

According to the health district the child, who is under the age of 10, spent several days in the Intensive Care Unit before returning home in stable condition.

MIS-C is a condition that causes inflammation in different body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. While causes for MIS-C continue to be investigated, many children with the syndrome were infected with coronavirus at the time of their illness.

There have been 42 known cases of MIS-C in Washington State since the start of the pandemic.
