Grant County Fire District 6's Daniel Baergen received the Washington State Patrol's Life Saving Award from an incident on SR17 back in November.

The trooper presenting the award said it started when a man was driving southbound towing a boat when he had a severe coughing fit and ended up going off the road, down an embankment and his truck caught fire.

"All the doors were jammed by damage and/or the position of the vehicle. Mr. Baergen located a large rock and told [the driver] to cover himself and was able to break out his window. The driver was able to only partially exit the vehicle and had to be physically pulled from the vehicle and assisted to safety."

The State Patrol says the truck then became fully involved and would have likely cost the driver his life.
