Macy's announced Monday that the majority of its employees will be furloughed beginning this week.

According to a press release by the retailer, the Macy's, Bloomingdales and Bluemercury brands will be moving to the absolute minimum workforce needed to maintain basic operations.

Macy's was already in deep financial trouble when it closed all of its stores March 18th due to the coronavirus pandemic. The chain has announced two rounds of store closures within the last year.

There will be fewer furloughs in Macy's digital business in an effort to support distribution and call centers.

At least through May, furloughed employees who are enrolled in health benefits will continue to receive coverage with the company covering 100% of the premium. Macy's expects to bring furloughed workers back on a staggered basis as business resumes.
