As the 2020 state legislative session approaches, students still have the opportunity to work as pages in Olympia.

Representative Keith Goehner stated that pages have a strong history of involvement in Washington state, as they have been serving in the legislature since 1891.

"I will say that it's a short session this year so it's really important to get those applications in as soon as possible," said Goehner.

Goehner added that this is his second session as a member of the legislature and therefore his second year being involved in the program.

"We actually had one of the pages stay with us." Goehner explained, "It was great to get his feedback on what he was able to do and just the relationships he has built with other pages. It's encouraging to see these kids actually have an opportunity to get a better understanding of state government at work."

Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 16 and have written permission from their parents and school. Pages earn $35 a day while serving in the program.

Pages deliver documents and messages to legislators and staff. During debate in the House of Representatives chamber, they distribute amendments, bills and other paperwork for legislators. They also perform ceremonial tasks, such as presenting the flags.
