K9 Kait

The Chelan County Regional Justice Center has introduced K9 Gambit, a 3-year-old border collie mix. In August, the jail lost its narcotics-detecting canine, K9 Kait, when she died suddenly while undergoing treatment for a liver condition.

K9 Kait served as a narcotics-detecting canine with her partner and handler Corrections Deputy Jacob Lewis at the CCRJC until earlier this year. K9Kait passed away unexpectedly last month while undergoing treatment for chronic hepatitis of the liver.

A CT scan has revealed Kait has a very small liver and the main artery to her liver is shunted and blood flow is bypassing the liver. Vets believe the toxins that would normally get filtered through the liver are now a byproduct in the fluid building up in her abdomen. Kait is also suffering from a genetic disorder causing a B-12 deficiency

Kait is a seven-year-old border collie who has two medical issues, a vitamin B12 deficiency and a fluid buildup up in her abdomen.

County commissioners have an agreement with the Chelan County Regional Justice Center (CCRJ) to have K9 Kait working in some area schools. Mostly in a PR or goodwill capacity but if needed to identify contraband on school property.
