A 1-year-old boy has died as a result of the Cold Springs Canyon Fire in Okanogan county after a harrowing flight from the blaze by his parents.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hillary Franz announced the passing during a Wednesday visit to the town of Malden.

"I'm a bit shaken up, not only because of what we just saw, but we just learned the first fatality has happened amongst some pretty grueling conditions around this state," stated Franz.

According to our news partner iFIBER ONE, Uri Hyland and his parents, Jamie and Jake Hyland, were at their property near Cameron Lake Road and Paxton Canyon Road between Omak Lake and Malott in Okanogan County when the fire surrounded them.

The family was forced to abandon the vehicle they were traveling in after it was overtaken by flames. The Hylands were reported missing on Monday, and were later found by a patrol boat on the bank of the Columbia River.

Uri Hyland passed away from his injuries, and his mother Jamie was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for her severe burns.

Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said his department will treat this incident as a homicide unless further investigation confirms that the Cold Springs Canyon Fire was not human-caused.
