Leavenworth Mayor Carl Florea is declaring a disaster in the city and has requested aid from the National Guard to help deal with the unprecedented snowfall.

Communications Analyst Christie Voos said the city received 36 inches of snow in under 24 hours and some areas have seen four feet of snow in the last two days.

"Our public works crew have done an incredible job of clearing all of the main roads, secondary roads and most of the parking lots." explained Voos, "Now they are getting to work on the alleys and other critical areas."

Public Works Director Tom Wachholder has also been authorized to work with local contractors to get snow removed more quickly from the city. Contractors will begin work as soon as Friday afternoon.

The city asked the National Guard for assistance with citizen welfare checks, food delivery, general snow cleanup and private driveway snow removal. Voos said the request is in, but they are waiting for confirmation.

Voos added that the city will be taking information from community members to figure out where the help is needed. To get connected, visit the city's website.
