The City of Wenatchee will be adding almost 70 trees to area parks after being awarded a grant from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program.

Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director Dave Erickson said the grant was for $17,100. The City will use the staff time needed to plant the trees as their grant match.

"We've lost several over the years because of wind storms, ice, and other naturally occurring events," stated Erickson.

Parks receiving trees include Washington, Lincoln, Pioneer, Chase, and Hale, as well as the cemetery.

The grant requires the city maintain less than 10% of any one particular variety of tree, so staff had to inventory all of their trees in their parks. New trees will include sweet gum, autumn blaze maple, ginkgo, chanticleer pear, Chinese fringe, golden rain, London Plaintree, October glory maple, sugar maple, and tulip trees.
