Douglas County Treasurer Natalie Marx is in serious trouble after being suspended by the Board of Commissioners for her conduct related to payroll taxes.

Prosecuting Attorney Gordon Edgar said the county has filed a lawsuit against Marx's performance bond to try and recoup the tens of thousands of dollars lost.

Edgar said, "The County Commissioners learned of several instances of payroll taxes being submitted late and the imposition of penalties by the (Internal Revenue Service) for those late payments totaling around $100,000."

An investigation revealed 13 incidents where Marx failed to submit payroll taxes for Douglas County, Eastmont School District and Bridgeport School District in a timely manner. The incidents happened between 2020 and 2021.

IRS rules stipulate that, for large enough entities, payroll taxes must be submitted the next businesses day following pay day. The automatic penalty is 10% the payroll tax amount, plus any interest that accrues.

Former Douglas County Treasurer Nona Haberman will fill the role in the interim.
