Diabetics in Washington State receiving insulin through prescription drug coverage will be paying far less for the drug in the years to come.

Governor Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5546, which will cap the cost for a 30-day supply of insulin from $100 to $35, into law Friday.

"Making insulin as affordable as possible is the right thing to do and we are grateful that the legislature has taken this action." stated Inslee, "Which wouldn't be necessary if drug manufacturers and prescription benefit managers put save people's lives at the top of their list."

Any health plan issued or renewed after January 1st of next year that includes coverage for prescription insulin must be capped.

According to the legislation, prescription insulin drugs must be covered without being subject to a deductible, and any cost sharing paid by an enrollee must be applied toward the enrollee's deductible obligation.
