There will be no emergency fireworks ban in the unincorporated areas of Grant County after commissioners chose not to pass a measure that would have prohibited their sale and use for the time being. The region has experienced extremely high temperatures for over a week which has added to the area's drought conditions.

Commissioner Danny Stone said he formulated the resolution because he's experienced the lowest rainfall he's ever seen as a farmer.

"I also know that we celebrate freedom out on the freeway everyday at 70 miles per hour. There are some times when there is an accident, a special problem, construction, whatever, where we live at that freedom and we say 'Hey, we can only go 35 through here because something is going on.'"

Local fire chiefs appeared to be split on the issue.

Several members of the community questioned why it took so long for the meeting to take place. Sheriff Tom Jones said it would have been difficult for his office to enforce the emergency measure just a few days from the 4th.
