A single-vehicle accident killed one and snarled traffic on the Malaga-Alcoa Highway early this (Wednesday) morning.

Chelan County Sheriff’s Office chief of patrol Adam Musgrove says several calls came in just before 4 a.m. about the incident.

“We had a caller tell us there was a vehicle that was driving erratically on Malaga-Alcoa (Highway) heading towards Malaga. A short time later we received another call (that) a vehicle had gone off the road and struck a tree,” detailed Musgrove.

The driver, a woman in her early 40s, was ejected from the vehicle after it went off the roadway near the intersection of Lower Hedges Road.

She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Musgrove says her vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, went approximately 15 feet down an embankment before striking the tree.

Traffic on the highway was reduced to a single lane for roughly five hours while investigators worked the scene.

Musgrove says there is no word yet on what might have caused the accident or whether intoxicants were involved.

The driver’s name is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
