A significant rock slide occurred around 3:30 Tuesday morning about halfway up Pine Canyon in Douglas County, causing WSDOT to close that portion of US 2 indefinitely.

Trooper Jeremy Weber said with Pine Canyon closed, the two detour routes become McNeil Canyon Road to the north and Badger Mountain Road to the south.

"I was able to talk to the Superintendent on scene. He told me it could be a couple of days." explained Weber, "They had to go in and have it assessed for the future, to make sure it's going to be safe before they open it up. It's not just about moving debris, it's about making sure that it's a safe place for traffic to flow through."

Weber added that slides are relatively normal this time of year due to fluctuating temperatures, and motorists should always be on the lockout for rocks in the road in places like Pine Canyon, the Knapps Hill Tunnel area, and several locations to the west and south of Chelan.
