The City of Wenatchee will be installing improvements on a portion of Methow Street in the summer of 2021, including a roundabout.

The project will run between Crawford Avenue and Lincoln Street, right along side Lincoln Elementary.

Project Engineer Emma Honeycutt said the city is paying for most of the project through a Safe Routes to School grant from the Department of Transportation.

"So the Safe Routes to School Program is a grant program that funds projects that are in the vicinities of schools in cities in towns around the state." explained Honeycutt, "We try to put in bike lanes with those grants. You can improve crossings near schools. The main attention is just to help our kiddos get to school a little easier."

The grant is for $786,000, while the city will contribute between $200,000 and $300,000 in match funding. On top of the match funding, the city's utility fund is paying to replace a water main under the road before any repaving work.

Aside from the water main, improvements will include pavement markings and bike lanes, a repaved road, additional sidewalk, and a mini roundabout at the intersection of Methow Street and Crawford Avenue.

Most of the work should happen when school is out of session. Methow Street will be closed on and off during that time, and locals will still have access.
