The Soap Lake Police Department is getting federal money to hire additional staff.

The department says it’s getting $125,000 to help it retain an officer

The money is being used to pay up to 75 percent for 3 years of an officers’ salary through the Justice Department’s COPS Hiring Program.

Soap Lake Police say they’re one of only 4 departments in the state to get the grant money.

“We are extremely excited that we will be able to retain the position and keep providing excellent public safety services to our community,” the department said in a statement.

The Department of Justice announced Thursday that more than $139 million in grant funding through its COPS Hiring Program (CHP) would be going to 183 police departments across the country.

The three other Police Department's in Washington to receive the grant money are the Suquamish Indian Tribe of the Port Madison Reservation, Tukwila and Zillah.
