The Washington State Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that studded tire season is November 1st. Studded tires are allowed on Washington roads until March 31st.

Public Information Officer Barbara LaBoe said studded tires do not meet the "Tire Chains Required" provision, meaning every vehicle except four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive must still have chains.

"Many of our pass closures are caused not by snow levels, but by people spinning out, not having the right equipment, or going too fast and either going into a ditch, and we then have to shut the road down to get them out of the ditch, or even worse causing a collision."

Motorists found to be driving on studded tires before November 1st could be subject to a $137 fine.

People are urged to check with your tire dealer for year-round options, which are easier on the roads, such as winter tread tires.
