The Department of Commerce Behavioral Health Facilities Program is giving the City of Wenatchee almost $2 million in grant money to improve the Parkside Place property on Monitor Street.

The building houses both American Behavioral Health Systems (ABH) and the Women's Resource Center.

Parkside was donated to the city by Carl and Betty Campbell back in 2009, but Mayor Frank Kuntz says it should be owned by the state since its part of Washington's Regional Support Network for behavioral health.

"If you remember, the county got lots money to update the building." stated Kuntz, "When ABH walked in a lot of the improvements that were done either were done incorrectly or weren't finished."

Grant funding will reimburse some previous fixes the city has already made while also paying for work that is to come on the building's southside, which houses ABH. The grant will also reimburse the city about $110,000 for expenses that it incurred since 2018.

Work is required for the following issues:

  • Extensive mold removal
  • Failing concrete
  • Asphalt repair or replacement
  • Retaining walls that are close to falling
  • Fencing repair
  • Roofing work
  • Wooden pergolas that need refurbishment
  • The building's irrigation system
  • Parkside's exterior stucco siding
  • Brick work
  • Foundation problems
  • Installing a water retainage system
  • Updates to the attic ventilation system to prevent moisture
  • Repair or replace twelve roof mounted condensing units

Kuntz added that he believes Parkside will continue to be an issue for the city as long as it owns the building.

The repair project is set to go out to bid in the first few months of 2022, with work estimated to be completed roughly a year later.
