Be Ready for Dangerous and Busy National Forest

As we have moved into March, the avalanche danger in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest remains very high.

Public Affairs Officer Robin Demario says it's important to be aware of the conditions by checking the Northwest Avalanche Center's website.

"The risk will continue for very large and unsurvivable avalanches. Warming temperatures and sun could set off wet avalanches or large cornice falls. Advice from the NWAC is to avoid traveling on or under large open slopes, steep sparsely treed terrain, and areas that received recent wind drifting."

You can also contact your local ranger station for the latest conditions.

Also, Demario says they received 10,000 more applications to camp in the Enchantments than last year.

"Because of COVID, we’ve seen how during the spring and summer every day is like the 4^th of July, with large crowds of people in the forest. Everyone wants to get outdoors, so be prepared to share your space with lots of other folks."

She also reminds forest visitors to recreate responsibly.

Never bury trash in the snow or burn it. Take it home with you as there are no garbage removal services in the forest during the winter.
