The City of East Wenatchee is receiving $807,415 in grand money from the Transportation Improvement Board to build a traffic signal at the intersection of Rock Island Road and 3rd Street Southeast.

The intersection is sandwiched between the traffic signal at 3rd Street Southeast and State Route 28 to the west and the roundabout at 3rd Street Southeast and Highline Drive to the east. It is currently controlled by a stop sign.

According to the City of East Wenatchee, the intersection is prone to excessive delays, does not have designed crosswalks and is not ADA compliant.

City staff had applied for the Transportation Improvement Board grant the two years previous, but came up just short despite scoring well. The city was successful this year in large part because of the the planned relocation of the police department nearby at 50 Simon Street.

About 13,000 cars travel through the intersection each day.

Mayor Jerrilea Crawford said, "You know that area is growing quite a bit. There's a lot more traffic. I used to live off of Rock Island Road and it wasn't as busy as it is now."

The city will commit $138,486 in match funding for the project. Work is expected to begin in the spring of 2023.
