The Chelan County Sheriff's Office is getting the word out about an online public panel discussion regarding School Resource Officers (SRO) October 22nd from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

SROs from around the state will participate in the meeting, which is titled 'Bridges to Safety'.

Chelan and Manson School District SRO Deputy Nigel Hunter stated that the current political and social climate is generally negative toward SROs, especially with students of color and communities of color.

"So what we decided to do as a group of Washington State school safety officers was help educate people on the role of a School Resource Officer and the importance of building those relationships for students while they're in school," said Hunter.

Parents and other stakeholders are encouraged to take a survey that will decide what topics will be covered.

Currently, the top topics are:

  • The school to prison pipeline
  • Equipment that SRO's have
  • The scope of authority that SRO's have in relationship to the public school districts
