A brush fire in the 3900 block of Stayman Flats Road in Chelan County Saturday afternoon burned about an acre and a half and threatened a nearby home.

Entiat Fire Department Captain Adam Jones said the wind-aided blaze was sparked just before 5:00 pm.

"The land owner that lives there said they were out target practicing." explained Jones, "They took a shot, and then realized there was smoke and fire. They tried to go back and get a bucket of water, a hose, and a fire extinguisher. By the time they got back to where the fire was it was already well established and moving towards the north."

71 firefighters from Chelan County Fire Districts 1, 5, 7, and 8, the DNR, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management helped in keeping the fire from running up the Chelan Butte.

The blaze threatened a nearby home to the south at one point, but crews never let the fire get closer than 20 or 30 feet.

The fire was in mop-up by 9:45 pm
