Early camping opportunities and hiking trails are opening up in the National Forest.

The Lakeshore trail, on the North shore of Lake Chelan is logged out and now open. Robin DeMario with the National Forest Service says currently there are only a few local campgrounds open. "The only campgrounds that are open locally, are on the Entiat and Chelan Ranger District. Pine Flats, Fox Creek and Lake Creek campgrounds are open and are located at the Entiat River Road. On the Chelan Ranger District the up lake campgrounds are also open." The National Forest Service is reminding outdoor enthusiasts due to a cold wet spring, trail maintenance crews are just returning to work to log out and clear brush from forest trails.

DeMario says variable spring weather especially in the higher elevations, has kept some trails closed, while others are now open, and ready for hiking. "There is still a few snowy and wet areas on Outback Trail, so it's best to stay off that trail until it dries out. Mad River trail on the Entiat Ranger District is open and logged out from Pine Flats to Camp 9, about nine miles. Steliko Ridge is open and logged out."

The Silver Falls trailhead is open, but the trail is not completely logged out, and Shady Pass is still closed due to snow.

The Forest Service says forest users should wear layers of clothing, and be prepared for all types of weather.
