A woman was killed by a train Monday afternoon north of Leavenworth.

Chelan County Sheriff's Office Chief Jason Reinfeld said a BNSF train was traveling south on tracks that parallel Chumstick Highway at around 4:35 pm when the incident occurred.

The victim, 27 year old Carmen J. Twombly of Leavenworth, was walking southbound about 500 yards north of the Spromberg Canyon crossing when the train, unable to stop in time, struck her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I would say in that area there is definitely population." Reinfeld said, "I don't know how often people are walking actually on the tracks, but it's definitely not devoid of people in that area."

The Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
