Chelan County PUD may be selling off a large portion of its surplus hydropower through a 20-year contract if commissioners approve the move in the next week.

The proposed deal would commit up to 10% of the PUD's hydropower as part of a larger updated energy-marketing plan.

Spokesperson Rachel Hansen says a reduction of carbon-producing power sources across the country has opened up a market for the PUD to offer its surplus hydropower.

"It's increasing the value of hydropower," Hansen said. "So it's a good time right now to sell Chelan PUD's surplus."

Hansen also pointed out that those sales brings returns back to Chelan County.

"When we sell the surplus energy on the wholesale power market, those benefits stay in the community," said Hansen. "Through some of the lowest rates in the nation, we're able to enhance the quality of life here through parks, and through our super-fast internet, water and waste water."

The contract, if approved by PUD Commissioners, would also help cover future costs of producing hydropower at Rocky Reach and Rock Island dams.
