An East Wenatchee man was honored by Mayor Jerrilea Crawford and the city for risking his life to save one of his neighbors during a fire at their home.

Ted Barrios, who was up getting ready for his shift as a driver for Waste Management, saw flames engulfing his neighbor's home that had eight people, including five children normally living there.

The mother in the house was able to get her two youngest kids to safety and the other three were sleeping at another house.

Barrios ran inside the house without shoes on to help the father bring the grandmother outside to escape the flames.

Barrios, who's been a driver at Waste Management for two years, said he knew he had to try to help because of the kids and that, "The loss of a child is the worst thing. You’d have to live with that the rest of your life."
