The Eastmont School Board voted Monday night to to approve the district's reopening plan for the upcoming school year, which will begin with an online model and transition into face-to-face instruction.

The youngest students and those with special needs will be the first to return to campus. Remaining students will then be incrementally invited back. The district plans to use student cohorts to reduce the potential for COVID transmission and quarantines of entire schools.

Superintendent Garn Christensen said, "We're also looking at doing an orientation process the first week of school. We'll make sure that we do as much direct communication with each student as possible. Is their technology working? Do they understand what's expected of them? (That way) we can get into increasing expectations and move into actually grading assignments."

Board Member Whitney Smith said she was disappointed that district staff was given a very small box to work inside of.

"I'm heartbroken by this plan. I think it is in no way what is best for our kids. COVID is one aspect, but when we consider the emotional and social impact to our kids, I would really consider the long-term effects that this plan presents," explained Smith.

The district will now focus on communication and sharing the plan with staff, students, and parents.
