Former Grant County Sheriff Felix Ramon, who served from 1983 to 1989 and was the county's 16th sheriff, passed away Sunday.

Current Sheriff Tom Jones said that although only two employees currently in the department worked with Ramon, he was a very popular sheriff and was well liked throughout the county.

"One of the things that Sheriff Ramon did when I first got elected, even though I didn't work for him, he reached out to me almost immediately and congratulated me." Jones said, "We actually became friends and he was somewhat of a mentor. If he saw something I was doing he wouldn't be hesitant about calling me and saying, 'Hey did you think about this?' or 'Hey did you think about that?'"

Units from the Grant County Sheriff's Office will escort Ramon on the way to his funeral in Cheney.
