School districts in the region are working hard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their students and staff in the wake of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Wenatchee School District communications director Diana Haglund says providing a connection to any necessary assistance is of the utmost importance.

“When incidents like this happen, we reach out to our families, our students and our staff to make sure they’re connected with support services in the event of crisis and stress in their life,” said Haglund.

Haglund added that the tragedy has provided a reason to place an even greater emphasis on safety at the district’s schools.

“It’s always a reminder that we need to be vigilant about our safety protocols,” explained Haglund. “And that is something that our district has invested in and reflecting on those practices and ensure that we have good systems in place to ensure the safety of our students and our staff.”

The district will send a letter to the families of its students today which will include tips on how to help children at all grade levels cope with the tragedy.

“(The letter will be) Giving parents some tips about trying to keep routines normal, limiting exposure to television and news and just really being honest with them and sharing as much information as they are developmentally able to handle, and just listen to kids and discuss the fears and concerns they might have,” detailed Haglund.

The shooting in Uvalde left 21 dead on Tuesday, including 19 elementary school students.
