State Moving Closer to Pay Per Mile as Replacement for Gas Tax
The Washington State Transportation Commission took the next step in switching the state to a pay-per-mile system rather than a gas tax by approving recommendations that will be passed on to the legislature and Governor's office.
Amongst the suggestions, a transition time, charge for electric and hybrid vehicles which currently pay little to no gas tax, and addressing inter-state travel.
Jerry Litt, chair of the Washington State Transportation Commission says “Revenues from our state gas tax will begin to decline as vehicle fuel efficiency continues to increase. We are already struggling to ensure adequate funding to maintain our system of roads and bridges today."
A recent Washington Policy Center poll showed most Washingtonians oppose a pay-per-mile tax.
