Voting on a referendum can always be a little confusing, and the pressure to fully understand how to vote on a referendum like R-90 certainly raises the stakes.

The state government in March approved Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5395, which requires school districts to adopt or develop comprehensive age-appropriate sexual health education. The legislation passed along largely party lines in the state House and Senate. Over 129,000 signatures were later collected to get the referendum on the ballot.

State Senator Brad Hawkins said, "The voters basically have a chance to play the role of a lawmaker in Olympia. If they support the measure, then they would vote 'yes', and if they want to reject the referendum, then they would vote 'no'. So a 'no' vote on the referendum is the same as a 'no' vote on Senate Bill 5395."

Some of the curriculum could go into effect in early December if the referendum is approved.
