Winco, City, Property Owner Come to Terms on Maple St Intersection

The Wenatchee City Council held a public hearing last week regarding Winco's development agreement with the City.

Although no members of the public provided feedback during the hearing, the agreement was passed unanimously by the council.

As part of Winco's purchase of the old Shopko building in Wenatchee, a traffic impact analysis had to be submitted and two traffic revisions to the intersection of Maple Street and North Wenatchee Avenue were identified.

Winco has agreed to design and install a protected left turn lane for those turning northbound in the intersection. Kellogg properties, who own the land, will dedicate to the City a portion of the northeast corner of the property for construction of a future eastbound to southbound right turn lane.

Mayor Frank Kuntz said, "It went back and forth. I thought we had an agreement on three different occasions. Ultimately, I think we got about all that we could get out of them in terms of getting the right of way for a future right-hand turn lane."

The area being dedicated to the City for the future right turn lane contains an existing pole-sign, which Winco has planned to use with new sign artwork until the sign's eventual removal.
