Volunteers from Columbia Valley Community Health and Serve Wenatchee Valley were blown away by the turnout for their mask collection event Saturday at the Town Toyota Center.

Communications Specialist Katherine Bohm said that, going into the event, the goal was 200 to 500 masks, perhaps even 1,000 if things went well. CVCH received over 1,300 masks during the three hour event.

The masks will be distributed at the August Back to School Health Fair for Wenatchee and Eastmont School districts.

"We just had a family drop off 300 masks. The mom explained it's a whole family affair. The children actually help make the masks and bag the masks. So it's really been remarkable to see people come together to help perfect strangers," Bohm said.

CVCH is still accepting masks outside of the event. Visit CVCH's website or Facebook page for directions to the drop-off site at 600 Orondo in Wenatchee.

Chelan County PUD also held a resource fair next to the mask collection event.
