With holiday season officially here, houses will soon be adorned in festive lights, wreaths and the seasonal centerpiece, a Christmas tree. The State Fire Marshal's office reminds folks while Christmas trees, candles and decorations are all part of the Christmas spirit, these elements can also create safety hazards.

"First, choose the right tree," said Deputy State Fire Marshal Alyson VanCleave.

If folks opt for an artificial tree, VanCleave advises to double check it's labeled as fire retardant. Those that chop their own tree or buy one from a stand, make sure the needles are bright green and don't fall off when touched. It's also important to water live trees.

"Second, choose the right decorations. We recommend you chose decorations that are labeled as fire resistant or retardant," said VanCleave. "And keep those decorations at least three feet from any heat source."

Lastly, VanCleave cautions that though candles are a year round staple in some homes, there is a spike in candle fires this time of year.

"We ask that you keep candles away from kiddos and never leave candles unattended," said VanCleave.

Fires correlated to holiday decor are rare, however are much more dangerous than other types of fires. According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), over the past five years in Washington State, one in every 42 residential fires caused by Christmas trees or holiday decorations resulted in a civilian death, compared to one death per 108 fires from other causes.
